Interview

( 1 ) What were your first Impressions of the project?

I was excited to be part of this. I've always been curious about how others achieve their styles, the way the structure their code and all the bits viewers typically don’t see.

( 2 ) What surprised you?

There were aspects of the project, like his utilities library, that I found quite inspiring. Very often in my projects, I end up rewriting bits of code that would be better off in a library like his.

( 3 ) What was your creative process?

Around the time Tyler reached out, I was already working on an idea, but had hit a brick wall. My base idea was centered around spirals, so I was trying a range of things with randomness sprinkled in just to see what happens. Seeing his final artwork and some of the methods he'd used opened my mind, and with his guidance, I was able to find my way.

( 4 ) What did you change and why?

One frustration I have when making gen art is how easy it is to get lost in the process, endlessly tweaking until you end up hating it. A simple change of colors opened up the project so much, and with a theme of sorts to follow, it pushed me further to the final outputs you see now. The waveforms he used in his piece fed into my project really well, and it was just a case of trying out some of his functions, like 'snapTo', which changed the aesthetic of my project massively. Ultimately, I went for a handmade aesthetic, in a way, humanizing the algorithm.

( 5 ) What did you keep and why?

I’ve always been a fan of Tyler’s pallets, and I really loved the colors he used; they stood out to me! I can’t fully express how it made me feel, but "light" fits for now.
